How to Become an Electrician

A friend of mine wants to get into the trades and he’s looking at being an electrician. He’s not sure if he needs to go to trade school or where he would find an apprenticeship. Also how long does it take to become an electrician if he starts now?

A career as an electrician can be very rewarding. You can be involved in the installation and maintenance of many different systems that are used every day in homes, businesses and factories. Almost all of these structures require electrical power, communications and lighting systems to function properly and safely. Electricians are responsible for ensuring that these systems are installed and up to code when new construction is underway or when existing buildings are being renovated or expanded.

To become anĀ Electrician , you will first need to have a high school diploma or GED certificate. This is the minimum requirement for most trade schools and apprenticeship programs. You should pursue at least some post-secondary education if you genuinely want to succeed in this field, however. A few years of vocational or community college coursework in subjects such as mathematics, circuitry, wiring and motor controls can give you a leg up when it comes time to enter the workforce.

After you’ve obtained your degree or completed an apprenticeship program, you will need to pass a state exam to become licensed as an electrician. Most states have their own rules and regulations regarding licensure, but all of them will involve some combination of classroom instruction, practical training and paid work experience. You can often prepare for this test while enrolled in your program at a trade school or through an apprenticeship, as these programs will provide you with much of the instruction that you will need.

Once you are a licensed electrician, you will be able to work independently. You can choose to work with a group of other electricians or you can operate your own business. Some licensed electricians also choose to specialize in certain types of electrical work, such as residential, commercial or industrial.

If you are a highly motivated and physically fit individual, then a career as an electrician may be right for you. This profession can be very dangerous, and the hours are typically long, but the satisfaction you will receive from completing your work can be tremendous. The most successful electricians enjoy what they do and wake up excited to start each day.
